A little history

From its unique beginnings through three generations, Rebel Marina continues to be a special spot to visit or stay a while. See more about the Briggs family and Lane’s famous Tugantine.

In 1974, Lane Briggs bought a tugboat and began a salvage business on the land that would become Rebel Marina.
In 1975, Lane put a schooner rig on his salvage tug creating his famous Tugantine and founding the Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race.
Lane and his wife raised four boys to become commercial fishermen and licensed captains. From left to right: Steve, Terry, Lane, David and Jessie.
In time, salvage gave way to sailboats and trawlers and Rebel was on its way to becoming the marina you see today.
In 1995, Lane (pictured with grandkids) retired to cruise his Tugantine. Son David took over the marina and raised his daughter on his converted tugboat.
The marina has continued to evolve and now a third generation lives aboard and helps run Rebel.

some Kind words from our guests

We look forward to your visit!

“I pulled in about six years ago to provision before heading south and could not believe how warm and helpful everybody was. We make it to Rebel twice a year now, north-and south-bound. Wouldn’t miss it!”

“I have to laugh when I think we just ducked into Rebel to do repairs before an off-shore leg and never left. That was ten years ago! It’s that kind of place.”

“We have been stopping in Rebel for 10 years. This is not a fancy stop but it has more character than any you might find on the waterway. There is a waiting list to get a permanent slip there for all the right reasons. A great compo of working folks and retired Navy Brass. Spotless heads and a great room that supports potlucks and local community events. Mostly floating docks. It is a legacy to Lane Briggs, a legend in Norfolk and the founder of the Schooner Race down the bay. Never much transient space but if you like a bit of history and some adventure and like rubbing elbows with some real watermen, give it a try.”
